This is an original 1895 black and white steel engraving of a portrait of Jerome Anthony Watrous, who moved to Wisconsin from Conklin, New York, in 1857. Watrous was a member of Company E, 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the U. S. Civil War. During the Spanish-American War, Watrous served as a high ranking U. S. Army military officer. Watrous also served as a political figure in the Milwaukee community, becoming a Republican state assemblyman for a time, among holding other political positions. He also spent a significant amount of time serving as editor for a variety of Wisconsin-based periodicals, including the
Appleton Crescent, the
Fond Du Lac Commonwealth, the
Black River Falls Jackson County Banner, the
Menasha Conservator and the
Milwaukee Sunday Telegraph. In his later years, Watrous wrote various historical and military based articles.
