This is an original 1943 color print ad for the Hercules Powder Company, who used cellulose acetate to reduce the casualties in blind-flying training during World War II. As the use of flight instruments became more crucial for night-flying and combat, it was necessary to train pilots to rely solely on the tools in front of them. In a cockpit with green plastic, the trainee would wear red-tinted goggles, rendering his external vision useless and forcing him to focus on the task at hand. The pilot, without goggles, would be able to see out of the cockpit just fine.
