Muscle Cars

The history of the muscle car runs back to the time of Prohibition. Automobiles were souped up by bootleggers and moonshiners to easily out-pace police vehicles—speed, handling, and storage capacity were all crucial components of the revamped cars, and the South soon became infamous for them. These vehicles were the inspiration behind the first mass-produced muscle car—the Oldsmobile Rocket 88.

Soon, competition sprang from several car manufacturers, and the era of the muscle car was in full swing. Some of the more famous and memorable models include the 1967 Pontiac GTO, the Ford Mustang, the 1968 Plymouth Road Runner, and the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. Drag racing became quite popular in the 1960s as engines became more powerful and hot rods faster.

The death of the muscle car came in the early 1970s. The United States was feeling the effects of the first oil crisis, and new safety standards regulated emissions and forced automakers to add more weight to the bumper of vehicles, thereby restricting the speed and performance of the cars.

Most of this category features advertisements from the golden age of muscle cars between the years of 1965 and 1973. These advertisements are some of our hottest selling vintage printed ephemera due to their nostalgic nature, and make a great addition to any classic car enthusiast's collection.
