This is an original 1849 black and white copper engraving of a portrait of Flavius Josephus. Shown beneath his portrait is an incense burner, a book of his works, various weapons, and an image of Medusa on a shield. Josephus was a Roman Jewish historian whose most important works include, "The Antiquities of the Jews" and "The Jewish War".

Period Paper is pleased to present a rare collection of copper-plate engravings depicting the Jewish antiquities and the Jewish War from a translation of Flavius Josephus' genuine works. Josephus (37-100 AD), was a Jewish historian and provided valuable information on the background of early Christianity, and of Judaism in the 1st century. These copper-plate engravings, which accompanied the manuscript, offer remarkable depth and vivid detailing. Please take a closer look at these images, as they are absolutely stunning in their contrast, and would look exceptional framed.
