This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of Dante Rossetti's Monna Pomona, an intriguing piece from the Pre-Raphaelite movement. In ancient Roman mythology, Pomona was a wood nymph and goddess of gardens and orchards (etymologically, her name is derived from the Latin pomum, which refers to orchard fruit). That may be why the woman in this piece is lightly clasping an apple in one hand and holds roses in her lap. Why she is toying with her necklace in such an odd fashion is anyone's guess... Perhaps that is why this portrait has captured the attention of all those who view it.
