Henri Julien Félix Rousseau

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844-1910) was a native of Laval, Mayenne in the Loire Valley of France. He was most recognized as a Post Impressionist and primitive painter. The majority of Rousseau's art centered on jungle scenes, though interestingly, Rousseau had never seen a jungle; in fact, he had never left France. He is said to have been inspired by the botanical gardens of Paris, wildlife taxidermy, and illustrated books. Rousseau claimed to be self taught, though he admittedly received guidance from Academic artists Félix Auguste-Clément and Jean-Léon Gérome.

Keywords specific to this image: surreal, primitive, naive, post impression
