This is an original 1858 hand-painted four-color lithograph of a medieval text concerning the life of St. Edward the Confessor. Presented here in the original Latin, this is a gorgeous piece showing the artistry of printing in the early eleventh century. This rare piece shows a small portion of a work, written for Edith, wife of St. Edward entitled Vita Aeduuardi Regis Qui Apud Westmonasterium Requiescit which is housed in the Harleian Collection of the British Museum and largely concerns his time spent studying religion and the construction of Westminster Abbey.

St. Edward the Confessor was born sometime between 1003-05. The last king of the House of Wessex, Edward ruled from 1042 to his banishment and consequent death in 1066. He is widely regarded as responsible for the disintegration of the royal power in England ushering in the Godwin family. Edward's rise to the throne was popular among the people, but dangerously unstable amongst the noble families who were looking for a new line of ascension. St. Edward proved this to be a much easier task than many had hoped as he was reputed to have spent more time studying religion and taking Norman counsel in seclusion.
