This is an original 1874 black and white in-text wood engraving of illustrations by Sir Sydney Prior Hall (1842-1922) that portray the Mer de Glace, (or Sea of Ice) glacier on the slopes of the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps mountains and a veteran mountaineer leading a group of amateur climbers at Gornergrat in the Pennine Alps of Switzerland, Europe during the Victorian era.
