This is an original 1877 monochrome lithograph of French King Charles IX explaining his nightmares to his personal surgeon, Ambrose Pare. He died at the age of 24, so stressed from the guilt of participating in the massacre of St. Bartholomew that blood oozed from the pores of his skin before he breathed his last. The massacre of St. Bartholomew lasted a week, and an estimated seventy thousand Huguenots were butchered. A spectral figure of a woman and child can be seen haunting Charles IX in the image.
