This is an original 1879 black and white wood engraving depicting a burial in the Australian steppes.

This image was procured from a rare portfolio of wood engravings and lithographs which delves into the culture and landscape of Australasia in the late 19th century. It accompanied the work of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), the British anthropologist, biologist, and naturalist. Wallace is remembered for first proposing the theory correlating evolution and natural selection, which pushed Charles Darwin to publish his own theories. Due to the slight water damage and moisture wrinkling, we are selling these engravings and lithographs for much less than they are worth; they would still frame beautifully, and be a wonderful addition to any traveler's collection.
