This is an original 1898 halftone print of Fort Sumter, which illustrated the effect of shot and shell. This structure was named after Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter. The monument was constructed after the War of 1812. The historical landmark is perhaps most famous for where the shots that initiated the American Civil War were fired. Fort Sumter is located at Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Photography by Anthony and Company of New York.
