The San Francisco Earthquake: On April 18, 1906, shortly after 5:00 a.m. an earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, struck San Francisco and the outlying area. The damage from the quake was magnified by the subsequent fires which broke out and burned wildly for days. Estimates of the number of victims of this great disaster range from 3000 to possibly 6000.
