"Nob Hill from St. Mary's Cathedral after the Fire. Van Ness Avenue bread line in the foreground."

Period Paper has obtained a scarce collection of original images from the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. On April 18, 1906, shortly after 5:00 a.m. an earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, struck San Francisco and the outlying area. The damage from the quake was magnified by the subsequent fires which broke out and burned wildly for days. Estimates of the number of victims of this great disaster range from 3000 to possibly 6000. This collection was published shortly after the quake and fire and includes some before and after pictures.
