This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of Christ being crucified during the passion play put on by the town of Oberammergau, Germany (Deutschland). Also shown in the scene are two thieves, John, weeping women, and Roman guards. The town is famous for its Passion Play, first performed in 1634, and presented once every ten years thereafter. The citizens made a vow to God to perform the play after being spared from the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The play involves over 2,000 actors and utilizes all of the residents in the village.
