This is an original 1926 halftone print of the site of English settlement in America. The monument reads: "On this site, in July, August 1585, O. S. colonists sent out from England by Sir Walter Raleigh built a fort called by them 'The New Fort in Virginia.'" This landmark was near the place where Virginia Dare, the first child of English parents born in America, was born in 1587. Photography courtesy of Clifton Adams.
