This is an original 1930 halftone print of the
Empress of Australia, who was launched in December of 1913. The caption writes, "In 1928, Pat, the gray and black cat, walked onto the
Empress of Australia and has stayed there ever since (except for one brief excursion on the wharves of New York). The
Empress of Australia was most heard of in 1923 when she did relief work for the Japanese earthquake." The earthquake mentioned was the Great Kanto earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.9, and killed between 100,000 and 140,000 people.
