This is an original 1931 halftone print of the director's room of the Netherlands Trading Company in Amsterdam. The caption reads, "In Java, half a world away, they had an island which, next to Cuba, was the world's greatest sugar exporter. In Java, too, they had an industry which could produce sugar at a lower average cost than that of any other nation. They could urge that they had neither advocated nor profited by the bounties and the tariffs by which overproduction had been abetted; they had not even tariff preference to help them import Javan sugar into Holland."
