This is an original 1936 color print of customers dining at the Famous Door, located in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. Shown in the background is a band, featuring trumpeter Joe "Wingy" Mannone, and the clarinetist Joe Marsala. The caption writes, "The Famous Door on West Fifty-second Street is one of several small spots catering to the current downtown popularity of the spontaneous kind of jazz music that helped to make uptown Harlem famous..." The Harlem Renaissance was going on at the time of this image. It spanned from the 1920s to the 1930s, and paved the way for a new black identity. It set a foundation for the Civil Rights movement, and pushed out a cultural explosion of African American heroes like Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, Walter White, and Jacob Lawrence as well as dozens of others.
