This is an original 1947 black and white photogravure of the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, the oldest drug store in America, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Specializing in the state-of-the-art treatments of his day, including leeches, lancets and herbs, Dr. Hugh Mercer served the citizens of Fredericksburg in the eighteenth century. Dr. Mercer joined the Revolutionary army after practicing medicine for fifteen years; he was killed-in-action at the Battle of Princeton with the rank of Brigadier General.
