Period Paper is pleased to present an incredibly rare collection, from perhaps the most unique and all-encompassing portfolio of Japanese mountaineering and exploration. Featured in the collection are panoramas of Umbrella Peak, Akaiishi San, Saddle Peak, Harinoki Pass, the Ryu-zanjita hot springs, and various other landscapes of Japan. The images were compiled by Walter Weston-- the ÒFatherÓ of Japanese mountaineering, who traveled in the late 19th century to the country as a missionary for EnglandÕs Church Missionary Society. Weston spent fifteen years in Japan, and began to mountain climb after discovering a strong love for the cultureÕs customs, traditions, and landscapes. In 1917, the Royal Geographical Society awarded Weston a grant for his Japanese studies. Weston was also an active member of the Japan Society of London, and the Alpine Club of Great Britain. The Japanese Alpine Club erected a monument in WestonÕs honor in the Japanese Alps in Kamikochi, Nagano Prefecture. Immerse yourself in Japanese mountaineering, and delve into WestonÕs legacy by clicking on the link offered at the bottom of the condition paragraph.
