This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the United States Virgin Islands. Shown are native homes, a pirate castle, and United States Marines at a fort in St. Thomas. The caption for the latter writes, "United States marines raising the Stars and Stripes over the fort at St. Thomas, in the Virgin Island group that came into the possession of our Government by purchase March 31, 1917. The principal members of the group are St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, which with some fifty smaller ones were bought by us from Denmark."
