This is an original 1945 monochrome halftone print of American troops stationed in the French city of Cherbourg several days after D-Day, in June of 1944. Allied forces immediately pushed to capture the fortified port in Cherbourg, which was considered essential to the war effort in Northern France. Finally capture at the end of June, the port cost the Allies nearly 3,000 killed, and over 13,000 wounded.
