Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was a versatile French artist known for his paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. Preferring to be called a realist, he was nevertheless a key personage in the Impressionism movement. The prevalent theme of his works lay in dance. Most of his subjects were dancers.

Degas was born of musical parents in 1834 in Paris, France-- a member of the then middle class, although his family gave the pretense of being in a higher level of society. He later disregarded any labeling of that sort.

Supported and encouraged by his father, he went to school at the Ecole Des Beaux-Art in Paris, studied for only one year, then traveled and painted in Italy. He was very talented at copying the works of then, well-known painters such as Raphael, Ingres, and Delacroix; as well as, Michelangelo and da Vinci.

Along with fellow artist Edouard Manet, Degas' works were received with some resistance. Art of that time followed certain traditions and Degas and Manet felt they should break free of such restrictions and be more modern. Later, along with other artists of the time such as Monet and Sisley, the Societe Anonyme des Artistes was formed to have art exhibitions that were free from the control of the Salon. He and these other artists were known as the Impressionists.

Degas' art consisted mainly of modern womenÉdancers of ballet, as well as many paintings with nude women as his subject. He is listed as being among the greatest of the Impressionist painters in history.
