Kanzan, depicted on the right holding and scroll and Jittoku, left holding a broom, are the twin, recluse masters told of in both Chinese and Japanese mythologies and were later more closely associated with the Boddhisatva Monju of Buddhist history. This piece was reproduced from the private collection of M. Henri Cernuschi by Henri Guérard.

Henri-Charles Guérard was born in Paris on April 24, 1846. Guérard started his artistic career in architectural design studying at the Ecoles des Beux-Art. However, by 1870 his focus had shifted from architecture to engraving and painting. This was in large part thanks to his teacher Nicholas Berton. When his brother married Eva Gonzales, this became an opening to establish himself in a larger circle of artists. Working with the likes of Manet and Renoir, he found himself a part of the elite society within Impressionist artists. Through the transfer of etching ink from an etched copperplate to special dampened paper run through an etching press, this process creates an image that registers an extraordinary variety of tones. This unique tonal range comes from photogravure's variable depth of etch--the shadows are etched many times deeper than the highlights unlike the halftone processes that merely vary dot size. The prints produced via this process have the subtle tones of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph, making them extraordinarily collectible items.

CONDITION

This 80+ year old Item is rated Near Mint / Very Fine+. Whymper was born in London, England and was the second of eleven children. His elder brother Frederick was also an artist and explorer, and became a celebrated wood engraver, much like Edward. Both had learned to engrave in their fatherÕs studio. In 1860, Edward was commissioned to create a portfolio depicting Professor BonneyÕs ascent of Mont Pelvoux. Whymper became enthralled with mountaineering during this experience, and went on to explore Mont Blanc and the Pennine Alps for himself for the remaining duration of the 1860s.

Whymper had unsuccessfully tried climbing the Matterhorn eight times, but in 1865, met with success with his six other party members. Unfortunately, during the descent, four of the men fell to their deaths, after one of the men slipped and fell onto another.

As an engraver, Whymper was innovative, and had the patience and skills necessary to manipulate the medium and furnish unusually sharp contrast within his pieces. This is extremely difficult to do with wood engravings, and yet Whymper succeeded at it, while maintaining the original pieceÕs composition.

Keywords specific to this image: shell, carapace, insect, Cotopaxi

XGZA1C91

1904 Lithograph Leon Mandel University Chicago Illinois M.G.

Pablo Picasso said of him, "When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is." Ambroise Vollard, the French art dealer, commissioned Chagall to create The Bible illustrations for the Old Testament (a series that won Chagall much praise), although unfortunately, he passed away before the project saw completion. Chagall could have completed the series in France, but instead traveled to Palestine, and became completely immersed in the history of Jews. He worked obsessively on the series, and traveled to Amsterdam to study the religious paintings of Rembrandt and El Greco. Chagall perceived the Old Testament as a human story, and portrays his characters as such. As Chagall was working on these pieces, the Third Reich was rising to power in Germany, and although the Germans had once swooned over his paintings, the pieces were classified as degenerate art, and destroyed. Chagall was located in France at the time, and in October of 1940, began to see Germany as a threat to his safety. With the help of Alfred Barr of the New York Museum of Modern Art, Chagall's name was added to the list of European artists the United States should try saving. Chagall received a forged United States visa and was able to flee the country in May of 1941 with his unfinished Bible series.

LTX6C66 zz5580

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1021/8371/products/LTX6_002_78807130-b099-484b-b9a2-fc593835fab8.jpg?v=1571707459
1951-lithograph-henri-de-toulouse-lautrec-art-tete-de-jeune-femme-portrait-study-240285-ltx1-009
1951 Lithograph Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Art Tete de Jeune Femme Portrait Study
"Tête de Jeune Femme"

This is an original 1951 two-color lithograph of a 1898 portrait study in red chalk on tinted paper by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

CONDITION

This 64+ year old Item is rated Near Mint. He, along with Picasso, developed the Cubist movement. He painted houses during the day and studied artistic painting during the evenings at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre before moving to Paris where he attended Academie Humbert. At first his style was impressionistic until he discovered and adapted to the Fauvist style. He exhibited his Fauvist work at the Salon des Independants before being influenced by Paul Cezanne. CezanneÕs work affected many of the avant-garde artists of Paris causing it to transform into Cubism.

"Tête de Femme de Profil a Gauche"

This is an original 1951 two-color lithograph of a portrait drawing in blue crayon by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

CONDITION

This 64+ year old Item is rated Very Fine +++. There is no visible artist signature.

Bonnard was born on 3 October 1867 at Frontenay-aux-Roses, Seine. Bonnard studied law, but gave up his career as a registrar for painting. At the Academie Julian, he made the acquaitance of Vuillard, Roussel and Serusier, and became a member of the "Nabis" group (a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists setting the pace of both fine arts and graphic arts in France during the 1890s).

His work is varied, and includes portraiture, landscape, decoration, painting, lithography and book-illustration. His palette was initially light in tone, evoking Japanese Art (1890), becoming darker, warmer, and more glowing (Parisian life and domestic scenes, 1895-1905), before again returning to a subtle tone. During this time, Bonnard was frequently outside Paris during the warmer months, spending time at Montval near Marly-le-Roi, then Vernouillet, Triel, and Vernon. The warmth and sunlight of these areas began to influence his palette, and beginning around 1910, his work became full of the strong sunlight of the South of France. Around 1915, Bonnard's work became more compact and constructive in use of form, while his color palette became even more vibrant and intense.

Bonnard did not paint from life, instead photographing his subjects and making notes about color and light. Upon return to his studio, Bonnard would refer to these photographs and notes when completing his work.
