"Damascus (Ananiae Domus). Ancient city of Damascus. Ananias' House in Damascus."

This is an original 1893 etching (individually hand-painted) of Ananias' House in Damascus.

Ananias resided in the city of Damascus and was a disciple of Jesus Christ. He was ordered by God to lay his hands on Paul (or Saul) to heal him of his blindness. When Ananias did this scales fell from Paul's eyes, he regained his vision and was then baptized. Ananias is listed as one of the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ, and his mission was documented in the gospel of Luke 10. This etching is his sacred and humble home in Damascus.

Damascus is the capital of Syria and is located in the southwest region of the country. To date, Damascus is the longest continuously occupied city in the world. Carbon dating points to the city's approximate colonization to be about 6300 BC; though no substantial foundation actually existed until the second millennium BC. Damascus is often referred to as "The City of Jasmine," and historically rendered as "A Well-Watered Place," as a result of the Barada River, which moves through the city. Damascus remains a major religious and cultural hub of the Levant, which was also known as The Holy Land during the crusades. The city's history has been affiliated with the Umayyad Caliphate (661-750), the Abbasid dynasty, and the Ottoman rule, during which the city crumbled, yet still managed to uphold its cultural prominence.

Period Paper is pleased to offer an extraordinary and rare collection of original etchings of the Holy Land including Syria, Cyprus and Egypt. Created to document the history of the Franciscan missions in the Holy Land, these etchings provide an excellent historic visual record of the landscape, architecture, and people of Palestine and the Middle East. Each individually hand-painted etching (from a photograph) is mounted on a thick fiber board with a stunning decorative design lithographed in rich gold gilt. These museum-quality etchings are impossible to find anywhere.

Accompanying each original etching is a digital print (for reference) of the description of the image in English, Latin, French, Italian, and German. (Please see both images.)
