This is an original 1795 black and white copper engraving of a map drawn by M. Funter of a cove on the Pacific Northwest coast located at 50 degrees 35 minutes latitude north and 231 degrees, 55 minutes east longitude.

Period Paper is pleased to offer a rare and important collection of copper engravings dating from 1795. The collection includes various antique maps, as well as views of present day British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, all related to the voyages of Captain John Meares. John Meares (c. 1756-1809) was a navigator, explorer, and a fur trader who explored the coast of the Pacific Northwest in addition to other voyages throughout the Pacific Ocean. He was known for his role in the Nootka Crisis, a territorial and trade dispute between Great Britain and Spain in what is now part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Considering the age of these items, they are in remarkably good condition. Please note that these engravings have one or more untrimmed, natural deckled edges, a style often associated with fine printing and high quality paper (or hand-made paper as in this case), as well as plate impressions from the engraving process.
