This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville, which depicts the execution of Brunehaut, the beautiful princess of the Visigoths who made the biggest mistake of her life by marrying Sigebert, King of Austrasia. Sigebert's brother Chilperic took one look at that gorgeous woman, and immediately asked if she had a sister. She did, and Chilperic married her, much to the horror of his conniving ex-wife, Fredegonde. In what would soon turn out to be a horrible decision, she had the new wife strangled, and remarried Chilperic, thus securing the hate connection between her and her sister-in-law Brunehaut for the rest of their lives. Fredegonde's unfortunate son, Clovis II, eventually had the poor woman executed, probably because of all the lies he was told about her by his evil mother. He chose to let her be dragged to death by a wild horse.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
