This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts King Louis IX, better known as Saint Louis, examining the meager meal which a poor woman was expected to serve to her sick husband. After a testing it thoroughly, the good king offered up his verdict, "It is rather hard bread." The monarch was known for his generosity and his willingness to help the less-fortunate, almost to a fault. He would allow them into his home, dine with them, and wash their feet as Christ did. Needless to say, some of his less charitable officials thought he was a bit of a loon.

He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art.
