This is an original 1883 black and white wood engraving of ukiyo-e or wood block print depicting a poet playing the Japanese stringed instrument, the koto by Totoya Hokkei, prominent student of famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. Hokkei rose to prominence as a favored artist of the style after years of working as a fish monger.
