He was raised in Salem, Ohio. His childhood home has now been converted into a museum in his dedication. Burchfield graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art and was a designer at the H. M. Birge Wallpaper Company of Buffalo, New York. In 1928, he hoped to paint full-time and sell through the Rehn gallery of New York. Despite the Great Depression, Burchfield's artwork continued to sell. His work has been featured in several exhibitions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is most known for his Plein Air paintings, printmaking, childrenÕs literature illustrations, graphic art design and easel paintings, as well as his impressionism, modernism and realism styles. PeirceÕs works primarily centered on the subjects of children, marine and nautical, sporting events, figures, portraits, streetscapes, winterscapes, waterfowl, genre, sports figures and coastal views.  His art has been exhibited at the International Carnegie Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery of Washington, D. C., the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Salons of America, the Society of Independent Artists and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Peirce was affiliated with the America Association of Painters and Sculptors, the WPA Federal Arts Project, the Society of Independent Artists and the Salons of America. He studied at the Chase School of Fine and Applied Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League and was influenced by the work of Howard Pyle and J. C. LeyendeckerÑtwo great illustrators of the period. He began his career with illustrations for the St. Nicholas magazine and other juvenile publications but he is most associated with The Saturday Evening Post for which he did more than 300 covers beginning in 1916. In addition to his magazine and advertising work he produced the famous Four Freedoms posters during WWII. His work captured the innocence of an America now long gone and with each drawing Rockwell told a story with considerable warmth and humor. Rebelling against his familyÕs attempts to groom him for a political career, Benton passionately pursued art, enrolling at the age of eighteen in the Art Institute of Chicago, before moving to Paris in 1909 to attend the Académie Julian.  While in Paris, Benton met and befriended Diego Rivera and Stanton MacDonald-Wright, later adapting MacDonald-WrightÕs abstract, synchronistic style, combining it with an extensive knowledge and understanding of Renaissance art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nUpon his return to the United States in 1913, Benton settled in New York City.  During World War I, he served in the United States Navy, drawing the life and work of the shipyards of Norfolk, Virginia.  His artistic experience during the war years and the common, ordinary theme of his work would come to have an unqualified effect on Benton.  Following the conclusion of his service, Benton returned to New York City in the early 1920s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nIt was during this time in New York that Benton developed and refined his representational, naturalistic and thematic style.  In conjunction with Grant Wood and John Curry, Benton ushered-in American scene painting, better known as Regionalism, declaring himself the enemy of modernism and removing himself to the rural and pastoral landscapes of his youth in Missouri.   Benton would subsequently travel throughout the United States, painting numerous and significant murals and scenes of ordinary American life, capturing in his distinct style both the mundane and fantastical.  BentonÕs contributionÕs to American art were not simply limited to the immediate impact of his own work, but included significant contributions as an educator.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nBenton taught at the Art Students League of New York (1926 to 1935) and the Kansas City Art Institute (1935-1941), where he educated a number of young artists who would go on to make significant contributions to American art.
