George Wesley Bellows

George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925) was an American artist hailing from Columbus, Ohio, prior to relocating to New York, where he received his formal art education at the Art Students League of New York and the New York School of Art (Chase School). He was most recognized for his Plein Air paintings, fresco murals, printmaking, illustrations, graphic art design and mosaics, as well as his impressionism and realism styles. Bellows was also well known for serving as a featured artist for ÒLIFEÓ magazine and for ÒThe CenturyÓ magazine. His works primarily centered on nudes, portraits, animals, caricatures, cityscapes, genre, landscapes, marine and nautical, snowscapes, sports and athletics, seascapes, military and war themes, figures, and historical subjects. His art has been exhibited at the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 (San Francisco WorldÕs Fair), the Vose Galleries in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D. C. and more. He was affiliated with the Boston Art Club, the Society of Illustrators, the National Arts Club, the Woodstock Art Association, the Society of Independent Artists and more. Later, Bellows taught at the Art Students League of New York.
