This is an original 1931 halftone print of Lobito Bay in Angola. The bay is the beginning of the Benguela Railway, which extends from the port to Luau, as well as to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The railway began building in 1902 under the leadership of Sir Robert Williams. The contractors had to pay the government of Angola £200 for each African worker who died on the job. For any worker who lost a leg, the contractors paid £30. The government was paid less for missing eyes and feet. The boss men had to supply the native workmen with a certain amount of food per week, and they had to make sure that the workers ate it.

In 1930, a year before this image was published, the mines of the Katanga copper district produced 9 percent of the world's copper, and 82 percent of the world's total radium supply. The mine was worked by Union Minière du Haut Katanga-- at the time, the world's largest producer of copper. Today, the Benguela Railway is 835 miles long.
