This is an original 1878 black and white wood engraving of a small cave located in the Kanheri Caves on the outskirts of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. The caves are located in the deep forest of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and have been carved into basalt rock; there are 109 in total. The caves show Buddhist influence, and date back from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century AD. Most of these caves are viharas, or Buddhist areas for meditation like the one shown, but some are chaityas-- large, congregational worship areas.
