This ancient abbey was erected around 1132, and served as a Cistercian monastery until Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of Monasteries in 1539. It was then sold to London merchant and father of the founder of the Royal Exchange, Sir Richard Gresham. Today, Fountains Abbey is deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is owned by the National Trust.
Interesting Fact: Fountains Abbey was the sight where the movie The Secret Garden was filmed.
