Endicott, widow of Judge Endicott, formerly Secretary of War, whose daugther is the wife of the Rt. Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, British ex-Secretary of State for the Colonies. Her grandfather, Joseph Peabody, one of the Salem's merchant prices, purchased this place in 1812 as a retreat for his family in case of a British attack on Salem.
