He is most well known for his travel literature and murals.  Peixotto was a frequent contributor to \u003ci\u003eScribner's Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e.  He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art before traveling to France in 1888 where he studied at the Accadémie Julian under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules Joseph Lefebvre.  Peixotto returned to the United States in 1894, joining the staff of \u003ci\u003eScribner's Magazine\u003c\/i\u003e in New York, before returning to France for work relating to the magazine. During this period, Peixotto illustrated Theodore Roosevelt's \u003ci\u003eLife of Oliver Cromwell\u003c\/i\u003e.  During World War I, he became the director of the United States Army's art-training center, which subsequently merged with the École des Beaux-Arts in 1923.  Following the merger, Pleixotto remained as the chair of the school's American Committee while simultaneously serving as the director of New York's Beaux-Arts Institute of Design's mural department.  Peixotto was active in the arts community until the time of his death, serving as president of the National Society of Mural Painters (1929-35), president of the School Art League of New York (1936-40), as a member of the Art Commission of New York City (1935-40), and was the director of murals for the 1939 New York World's Fair.
