Sapolio. Sapolio brand soap, manufactured by Enoch Morgan's Sons Company (New York), was a market leader in cleaning products and bar soap around the turn of the century. Though it lost much of the market share in America before World War II, Sapolio was purchased by the Peruvian company Intradevco in 1997 and is now marketing several cleaning products worldwide.
The history of Sapolio's advertising is often cited by marketing and advertising studies as being infamous for bad decision making. From 1883 to 1908 Artemas Ward led a hugely successful advertising campaign for Sapolio. Time magazine later said that, during its peak, Sapolio was probably the most advertised product in the world. After Artemas Ward went on to other projects however, Sapolio-- confident in their position-- focused less on advertising and experienced a steep decline in market share.
