Though he only sold 308 copies of the book, Chippendale became a sensation, as most of these books were sold to the aristocracy (Louis XVI and Catherine the Great both obtained copies of the French edition). This inevitably led to Chippendale becoming a household name. Though inarguably a wonderful craftsman and designer, Thomas Chippendale was a terrible businessman, and unfortunately lived most of his life with fierce competition, based partially on the fact that when he had published his book, he had given all of his competitors his patterns and ideas, easily allowing his potential clients to purchase Chippendale reproductions for much less. Interestingly, a genuine Chippendale today does not necessarily mean that Thomas Chippendale created it, or even knew of its existence-- all that it means is that the chair was built in the factory located in modern-day Trafalgar Square, London.

CONDITION

This 86+ year old Item is rated Very Fine ++.
