He attended the Slade School of Art and founded a magazine called \u003ci\u003eThe Island\u003c\/i\u003e in 1931. His life's work was a variety of mediums and subjects but he was known to dislike abstract art.  Underwood was also known to have been influenced by African, Mexican, and Cycladic styles.
