Ward often worked with wood engravings, but also worked in lithography, mezzotint, watercolor and oil. Ward grew up as the son of a Methodist minister in Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, and decided to become an artist once he realized that his last name, when spelled backwards, read "Draw." Ward published his first graphic novel, titled, Gods' Man in 1929, during the same week as the detrimental stock market crash. Ward was a member of the Society of American Graphic Arts, the National Academy of Design, and with the Society of Illustrators. In celebration of his life and artwork, 217 Films began work on a documentary of Ward, which premiered in March of 2012. Throughout his lifetime, Ward won various awards for his works, including the Library of Congress award, the Caldecott Medal and an award from Rutger's University for his children's books.

Keywords specific to this image: Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, sailing, boat

XGYA3C30 zz4740

https://www.periodpaper.com/products/1930-woodcut-ceylon-sri-lanka-indian-boat-canoe-portrait-lynd-ward-coast-harbor-159241-xgya3-013
