Buckham started his photography career in 1908 and in 1917, and became a reconnaissance photographer during World War I with the Royal Naval Air Service. Amazingly, Buckham was involved in nine crashes and was never seriously injured. Buckham felt his best shots came while he was standing up-- he is quoted as saying, \"if one's right leg is tied to the seat with a scarf or a piece of rope, it is possible to work in perfect security.\" Buckham originally wanted to become a painter, but after spending a day at the National Gallery and looking at Turner's paintings, he piled his paintings into a heap and set them on fire.
