This is an original 1936 color print of a man testing soils at the United States Department of Agriculture. The caption writes, "One of the great labors of the department is its soil survey of the U. S. now about half completed. Soil samples, dug from thousands of acres, are shipped to Washington laboratories, where their fine particles, dispersed in water in these tall glass graduates, are isolated and studied..."
