The landmark is an early example of curtain wall construction, which was developed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel built a system of trusses and springs underneath the skirts of the copper statue. This allowed the structure to withstand the daily beatings of rain, sun, wind, and ocean spray without cracking or breaking down.
