Each artist was active during a tumultuous transitional period in France, working at the end of the Ancient French Regime through the French Revolution.  Each artist was trained as a painter, but they are better known as printmakers who employed the technique of engraving, and more notably, aquatint.  Their prints were characterized by a light palette and a distinctive use of color.
