Coles Phillips
Coles Phillips (1880-1927) was an illustrator known for his stylish portrayals of women. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, and attended Kenyon College. For three months, he took night classes at the Chase School of Art in Manhattan. Phillips opened up his own advertising agency thereafter, and employed several artists, including his former classmate, Edward Hopper. Phillips was hired onto the Life magazine staff at the age of twenty-six. Phillips became known for his fade-away girl; no outlines were used for the figures, but the background was cleverly tied into the foreground, and the shape of the girl could be clearly identified. He was known for his advertising illustrations for Community Plate Silverware and the Holeproof Hosiery Company.
