Giotto di Bondone (1266/7- 1337)

A Florentine artist, Giotto was partially responsible for the shift from stiff Byzantine art into the more naturalistic poses that resulted in the artistic Renaissance. Instead of creating unrealistic, bizarrely-proportioned figures, Giotto drew inspiration from nature, seeing the realism that had been forgotten for about two hundred years prior.
