This is an original 1931 halftone print of a tobacco field in Connecticut. The caption writes, "The money crop of Connecticut is tobacco for cigar wrappers. The shad wrapper leaf is grown under cloth to protect it from sun, wind, and hail, and to increase the content of moisture in the soil."

Tobacco production dates back to the 17th century in the United States, and was originally planted for pipes and snuff. It was a giant cash crop in the southern United States, and saw tremendous growth once the cigarette was invented in the mid-1800s . The decline of tobacco happened after it was declared a health hazard and a cause of cancer in the mid-1900s. When looking at a tobacco plant, the best tobacco comes from the center of the stalk. The higher you go from the center, the stronger the flavor. The closer to the ground, the more mild. The limit to the number of leaves at the time of this image was twenty-seven for the best production and taste.
