Alfred Kubin 1969 Aquatones

Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) has been highly praised for his imaginative and haunting scenes. Depicted in his works are partial skeletons, exploding eyes, human figures hanging from the branches of a tree, and women weighted down by bulbous, egg-shaped stomachs. The scenes are maniacal and melancholy, demented, and highly sexualized. It was reported that multiple ladies and gentlemen fainted after viewing his work.

Throughout his career, Kubin illustrated pieces for Edgar Allan Poe, Kafka, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and became an important representative of the Expressionist and Symbolist movement. It is not surprising after seeing his works that Kubin struggled with depression and was haunted by childhood experiences.

The collection here includes original Aquatone prints from a 1969 portfolio published in New York.
