This is an original 1905 color print featuring an image of Joseph Nash's illustration of the drawing room in the Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire, England. The castle, surrounded by a grand moat, was erected around 1300, by Sir John de Broughton. In 1377, William Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, purchased the estate. In 1550, Richard Fiennes transformed the estate into the present Tudor house. The castle underwent many alterations in 1554, as well as in the 17th and 19th centuries. Sir William Fiennes later employed the manor as a meeting grounds for other activists against King Charles I. The 1642 battle that ensued was known as the Battle of Edgehill, and while the battle was lost, the Royalist troops endured and besieged the castle, occupying for quite some time. During the castle's presumed decline, Frederick Fiennes, 16th Lord Saye and Sele, employed Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott to remodel and refine the castle.
