This is an original 1817 black and white copper engraving titled, "Plan of a Grecian Palaestra after Vitruvius." A palaestra was an ancient Greek wrestling school, and functioned as a gymnasium. Vitruvius, who wrote around 27 BC, is known for his insight in the design of the building. Shown in the illustration are the halls for the philosophers; the epheboeum, or school for youth; the coryceium, or tennis court; the conisterium; the loutron, or bath of cold water; the elaeothesium, or place of anointing; the apodyterium for undressing; a vaulted stove; a laconicum; a bath; the propnigeum; the staircase; the xystus; and the stadium.

Please note that there is a blind emboss stamp on this map located in the top right corner; it does not affect the integrity of the engraving. These maps were obtained from the the State of Michigan as we acquired several collections from the historic archives/library. The stamp does not include any ink and does not break through the paper in any manner. To find other items related to this collection of rare maps, please see the link below.

This map was held in a portfolio and still has it's original center crease. We have packaged this flat, and open, in an archival package so the crease is minimized. The crease would be virtually invisible when matted and framed.

Please note that these maps were created on a handmade paper in 1817 and the borders may either be irregular or not square. The original copper plate impressions are visible on most even though they are not visible on the digital image. This map will be shipped in it's original untrimmed condition.
